She is ready to let me spend more on Sunchaser restoration than I spent to buy the car. If you meet a woman like this, Oppo, marry her and hang on to her.

Kinja'd!!!

I am not sure I want to spend this much money but this guy can even 3D print and chrome the luggage rack rail ends.

Oddly, the hardest thing to do is the rubber rails on the doors that seals the windows.

I want to impress at the Japanese Classic Car Show in 2017. Is this the wrong goal?

I’m visiting my mechanic tomorrow about cooling, which is a California priority. I feel like I am finally making progress after multiple restarts. The Sunchaser Facebook group estimates about 40 left in the world. I feel like it is worth preserving.

That is so great to hear! I wish my ex had been like that, but that one of the reasons I can be slightly happy about him not being in my life.

That’s the one by the Queen mary yeah? Growing up in Long Beach I have gone to a few. Haven’t been in a couple years though. I’d love to have a Z to take.... MMMMM I can taste the car bug getting to me....

Yes please preserve that car. How many were made?

I can be your new bf; I am 100% car tolerant and support all automotive-related ways of wasting/“investing” money. On second thought, though, the age-gap and my preference for Euro inline engines over American V8s could prove to be irreconcilable differences.

Money into a car is like money into a boat. People who don’t understand will think you are pouring money into a pit to never see it again, which is really sad because they are the same people that think their Hyundai Sonata is a good appliance car.

Hey now, a little age and a difference in tastes isn’t a bad thing. Just changes perspective and can lead to learning and doing things you wouldn’t expect or do on your own. Plus everyone loves a little Euro trash sometimes ;). I used to have a ‘84 318i I was going to turn into a racecar, but I blew the headgasket and got rid of it.

Haha, indeed. Different strokes for different folks, but to be honest, if you actually want just an appliance, the Camry does that so much better than the Sonata.

Yep, a bit of diversity never hurt anyone (except Trump supporters). Besides, I’d love to have a supercharged LS V8 Buick Roadmaster estate someday! ;) Haul ass, sass, and a whole lot of whatever fits in the back!

Haha, hence my cheeky “XD” as well! Anyways, good on your mom, I love the new GC and it’s probably better than the Q7 in the long run (as long as you didn’t get one of Chrysler’s lemons). My grandma wants a new CUV and I’m trying to steer her into a CPO XC60 instead of a CR-V...

There’s that pesky age gap again; I’m under the age range for both of those—I think I’ll pass!

Indeed, and VW only needed 553 lb ft to tow a 747!

Yeah she is loving her GC. She leased it this time instead of buying. So far so good. Top trim cause that’s my Mom (if it isn’t fancy she said no), but only got the V6. I told her to get the SRT or wait for a Hellcat GC, but she thought that was excessive. Almost got her to get a Macan, but the GC was too good a deal. At least is is Oppo brown.

Example:

Kinja'd!!!

See there you go making excuses again. So hard to find good guys to date ;). But what if it is a smoking only area?

Yes the XC60 would be 100 times, if not more, better than the CR-V.

Yeah, I personally support team GC over team Macan; the GC is just so much more functional and (at least around here) doesn’t scream “pretentious bastard” like the Macan does since it’s the new car of choice for FOB mainlanders whose parents have waaayyyy too much money.

These kinds of people: (Cayenne, yes, but same idea)

Well no one said finding a reasonable car guy to date was going to be easy for us! Just let life run its course while we continue to play the role of token representative of the LGBT community for Oppo. (Seems like we’re far from alone, have fhrblig, Miss Merc, and several others who crop up from time to time). I think this is basically how I feel though when I find another LGBT person here on Oppo:

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Yeah, she currently has a ‘10 Civic (the last good one IMO) but complained that it was underpowered since she came from an ‘02 Maxima. I think an XC60 would give her the power she needs while providing plenty of safety (the Maxima had to be replaced since she crashed it) over the CR-V. I would suggest an XC70 but I don’t think it’s quite high enough to be as easy to get into and out of and she wants a level loading bay (she paints so she doesn’t want to have to bend over to pick canvases out of her trunk as she has to with the Civic).

You are very much right about the way those two vehicles are looked at, but I just really really wanted to drive a Macan and thrash it about on some twisties. I doubt the GC will be aNY good at that, but she likes it and that’s what’s improtant.

I agree I think the XC60 would fit all the categories in which you are specifiying. I mean worse come to worse, if she is close, take her to test drive them. Them she came make an informed decision.

Omg, that post is kinda sadly me. That person hit the nail on the head. Lol, it is nice to see other LGBT people on here and see how open minded this group of people is. Which is probably why like 70% of my time spent on the Internet is on Oppo. That and working in parts at a dealership I’m on the computer all the time and car related stuff is generally ok. Anything else we just use our phones.

Oh, that I can understand; still, the GC is much better at being a couch which is really what you need sometimes. My dad’s 22 mile commute took an hour and forty-five minutes today and made him count his blessings that his DD is a Volvo.

Indeed, also, this would probably be her last car purchase so in addition to something she likes I think it would be apt to get her something a bit nicer on her budget. There’s really little to go wrong in the CPO XC60 vs new CR-V comparison.

Haha, that post is me whenever I’m on the internet. Personally it always seems like a lot of bullshit—all this about solidarity and whatnot—but it is kind of comforting and cool to know that there are similar people out and about that actually exist! I no longer live on Oppo because of college apps but hopefully I can get back to my favorite hobby of Oppo-ing in the spring semester!

Kinja'd!!! CaptDale - is secretly British > Amoore100

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah I guess you have a point there. My Mom’s commute consists of a 3 mile bike ride, so a long commute car wasn’t necessary, but a long driving trip car was, so the GC makes more sense.

Yeah, I understand that. That is what we did a few years ago when my Grandma wanted a new car. We got a new 2012 Subaru outback 3.6R. It had a little more tech than they wanted, but the 3.6 doesn’t have the oil consumption issues, so that’s why we went with it. They love it, but they baby their new cars. I mean my grandma wouldn’t even drive it till we had the pinstriper come out and make it unique (that’s what happened to the ‘96 Tahoe she has too when she bought that new back in the day.). They don’t drive it in the rain cause it is new... Yes the AWD system and super safe car is left in the garage while they drive their 64,000 mile ‘96 Tahoe because that is the old car now. They were upset when they got caught in a rain storm driving the Outback to LA and back once. Couple of odd balls if you ask me.

That’s so true. Especially when you go to car meets and such and all the fucking bros. Its like isn’t there one even cool person to talk to let alone another gay car guy even just to hang out with and such. Thank god for Oppo!

Kinja'd!!!1

Yep, nothing beats a good road-tripper although personally I find minivans better for long distance since there’s acres more human room and luggage room than you would find in a CUV.

Haha, that’s rather hilarious. Also, that must be the cleanest GMT400 Tahoe in the wurrrllld and in California it really doesn’t matter what you drive in the rain since it’s so infrequent and usually inadequate when it happens. That being said, I do make sure to engage ‘W’ mode in the Vo’ whenever it first rains since the roads are oily and slippery and it means I can floor it with no negative ramifications. We all have weird car habits and really as long as it doesn’t affect the rest of the people around us I really don’t care.

Indeed, at my school there are no ‘out’ car guys who aren’t absolute douchebros, and there are no ‘out’ gay guys that aren’t absolute dipshits. I have seen a tasteful V70R out and about but of course the guy is both not in any of my classes (mostly APs) or gay (has a gf) or cute (ugh maybe I’m just salty).

Besides that it’s just a bunch of fuckers in cheap Bimmers with plastidipped wheels and “Hoonigan” stickers for the former and petty and whiny little bitches who can’t be 100% annoying 100% of the time for the latter. Thus I love going on Oppo and finding people that are neither of those things for once (i.e. reasonable human beings).

I just can’t get passed the ugly Ness and uncool factor of the mini van. I’d much prefer a wagon due to its over all more practiality.

I am 100% that unless Jay Leno has a GMT400, then yes it is the world’s cleanest.

Ah yes well that is highschool. I wasn’t out then, but there were many reasons to that. least of all being a car guy. V70R, now that’s a tasteful all round vehicle. Too bad he is so elusive. You’ll meet a nice someone eventually. And then go tandem drift the southern bay area hills.

AP huh? Cool I was one of the odd ones out of my few groups of friends who took a bunch too. I think I had 5 APs, senior project, sports, and a couple regular classes my senior year. I sometimes miss being that busy. Easy to keep things off your mind.

I am so happy Hoonigan and plastidip weren’t a thing when I was in hs. Well at least not popular. Plus those weren’t things I put on my Jeep I had then. We had those assholes too, but then hank god some of my friends had some good cars, cause that was fun to cruise with them.

Yeah, especially the modern minivans are hideous. I may be biased, but I think the 2005 Ody was a good balance between practical and sleek without being overstyled. It has a stately executive-shuttle-like aura without the pseudo-spaceship styling.

Kinja'd!!!

And even though they’re not exceedingly pretty, I can think of no other vehicle which can haul six with luggage, carry Christmas trees inside, change clothing to go scuba diving, and everything else. Once you go minivan, you can never go back.

Haha, lol’d at the Jay Leno comment. Knowing him, he probably does.

Thanks, I haven’t been out but now that it’s senior year and I’m past caring I’m definitely starting to let my colors fly to more people. I can still pass off as a 100% cis to the ultra-Christian bastard in the locker room though so I’d say I’m nailing the gay agenda so far. I’m not out as a car guy either but my close girlfriends know how much of a frickin petrolhead I am. Certainly that hopefully lies in the future although I prefer carving corners to sliding them! ;)

Ugh, APs are both a blessing and a curse. Took one as a sophomore, five last year, and am taking four this year. The proposition of skipping a few GE’s and boosting my GPA is what’s kept me going although I’ve made countless friends and acquaintances in study groups as we all try to stay afloat.

Lucky; unfortunately we only have a.) the aforementioned plastidip group and b.) countless brand-spanking new Rav4's. I swear it could literally be our new school mascot, the 2016 Rav4. Oh, and the few people with rich parents like the guy with a tuned New Edge SN95 GT, another with a W203 C32 AMG, and the girl who alternates between a mint E36 ‘vert and a newish F01.

I minivaned once. It was a brand new Town and Country about 6 years ago. It was fabulous compaI red to the shit 80s motor home we had been driving to died. So we rented it to get home. While I’ll give you as a kid currier and storage unit it’s great, but if I want a car to haul stuff and kids, I’d still have to say the wagon wins. Then if I needed more space I’d just get a truck. Grew up years with the Escalade EXT (pickup) as our beach truck and such. Worked great. Hauled my scuba gear, surf boards, bicycles, and my whole family. Lol hell my friend does all that in his 5 series and  his wife in her 3 series. Nit that I’m trying t argue, I just loathe the mini van.

Ah yeah all my friends knew of my vehicular obsessions cause that’s what I talked a lot about. As for colors, I started coming out to certain friends during senior year cause I was s tired of hiding it and dating pretty girls.

Yeah that was exactly why I took APS too. Did look good for the colleges though.

Oh my, the Rav-4? Why? I can’t even think what the most polar car was at my school. I remember the parking lot being pretty eclectic.

Well as I always say, it’s hard to get a full string quartet anywhere with four people, a driver, and a cello without a minivan! Besides, the van gets around 20 mpg puttering around town which is more than impressive given what we put it through. I guess the van is just the ultimate car for lazy people; it does what a wagon, truck, and car can do all at once without having to bother. Most of the time we don’t even use racks or any equipment; got a bike? toss it in back. Scuba gear? sure. Fertilizer? yep. A christmas tree? no problem. Eight people? ditto. An entire apartment of furniture? why not. 0-60 in 8.5? good enough. It ain’t sexy but I have this fetish for extreme practicality and the Ody fills it in a massive way. Wagons are really compromised whenever I actually stop to look at them; I love them all the same but with just a cello in the back the V50 drops to a three seater. Pickups are great except fuel economy and non-lockability. I keep pestering my dad to get a Ridgeline for scuba because lockable underfloor wash bin but the problem is the Ridgeline lacks those extra seats for taking friends home at night. I guess what I’m trying to get at is there’s nothing to like about the van; it’s just a tool, but it’s excellent at doing what it does and I find that endearing.

Well my “girlfriend” and I have hung out for the past four years and we have gotten closer (she’s always known of course) but yeah, I know what you mean in that other guys would kill for your position while all you want to do is fuck them and not your girl.

APs definitely are a requirement nowadays to get any level of respectable education, especially in California. It’s a pain, but I guess it could be worse.

No idea. I assume cheap and boring. My friend’s parents just bought her one after I suggested everything from a CX-5 to CPO Q5s but you know how non-car people are: annoying and stubborn.

You have a very good point. As a tool the minivan makes sense. I guess I am just so used to Mommy and Daddy’s first child and they sell the fun salmon car for a mini van for Mommy and all she does is carry around one toddler and a sea of vomit, spilled Cherrios, and 6 diaper bags. Which that could all be done in a Ford Focus and get better mpg and take up less space in the world. Hell it might even get parked with in the lines... But for that much stuff you would be stuck between the minivan and a real SUV like a Yukon. Or maybe a wagon with a roof basket, but still. The was the best part about the ETX. Locking tailgate with integrated hard panels, locking side boxes built into the fender, the rear folded down to make a longer bed. It was a great truck.

OMG ha ha. I seriously busted up laughing about the other guys statement.

Yes they are, but you’re right it could be worse..... somehow.

Ick, I just hate when a sea of one vehicle is abound. I mean I get it Suzie has one, so you want one and it fits the parent’s parameters, but come on you stupid basic, ugg boots with short shorts and a large poofy jacket with fur wearing, Starbuck addicted, young female have some sort of individuality and personality which you drastically lack! True, I can’t argue against that. Having one kid as a rationale to get a van is just dumb. As for my mom, she moved from an auto 740 non-turbo sedan to the Ody so it was rather an upgrade! Still, she used to pilot a sixth-gen B-body Impala followed by a fourth-gen B-body Caprice so she’s well versed in the art of slotting giant pegs into little holes in terms of parking. The Caprice used to be our road-tripper since the 740 was getting old and was too small but with two bench seats it just barely fit my parents, my grandmother, and my brother and me in car seats. Add any scuba or camping gear and the trunk was simply outclassed. A Caprice wagon might have worked but three abreast is really not worth it for long trips.

Anyways, it’s sad but true. There are a few out guys that might be worth it but I hear they’re all players so really the high school dating scene is a no-go.

Actually, around here it’s more like Asian parents want to make it seem like they’re actually giving their kids something for once except instead of getting something nice like a CX-5 or Forester they just went for the cheapest and laziest thing possible. My friend was showing me the RAV4's key fob and it literally has a metal key out of a ‘90s RAV4 plus some buttons. My 12 year old ‘Vo has two additional buttons, a fob-key immobiliser ignition, and gets to 0-60 in about the same time with 8 fewer horses, one extra cylinder, weighs 300 fewer pounds, has a lower center of gravity, and, most importantly, cost 1/5 the price. I really don’t see any upside to the RAV4.

Thats funny. My mom has always had sports cars till I came along. She sold her ‘77 Trans am (I know WTF?! It was silver with the black chicken) and bought one of those ‘90s Town and Countries

Kinja'd!!!

Had it for a month, hated it and bought a Chevy 3500 dually in red

Kinja'd!!!

Then we got a red Chevy Suburban, but I forget which generation. I think late 80's. It got stolen and recovered once

Kinja'd!!!

Then a 2005 Escalade EXT in that awesome Riptide Blue

Kinja'd!!!

Then that truck wasn’t enough to tow her boat, so Enter I think a ‘12 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually

Kinja'd!!!

In conjunction with the Dodge a ‘01 MB SLK320

Kinja'd!!!

Then we sold the boat, sold the Dodge, my sister got the SLK and then she got the Root Beer Jeep GC. And those are just the vehicles she has had since I have been alive. My Mom has always been a bit of a car person whether she will admit it or not.

That is the problem. You have to play the game and sometimes you lose. That’s why I try my best not to play it. It is just easier.

Ah ok, yeah growing up in Long Beach it was always the girls trying to keep up with each other through their parents. I think there was a majority of base Jettas now that I think about it.
